Temperament: They do not just imitate they understand. Scooter’s intelligence is seen on a daily basis whether he is asking for butter on his toast, speaking in sentences, giving a hug or a kiss, commenting on a situation, or appropriately responding to a question or situation; and Scooter also loves to throw his two cents in when there is a conversation between people in the household. Another scenario is Alex who has been studied by Dr. Irene Pepperberb, when asked a question Alex will express his response verbally. Greys have the mental capacity of a 5 year old human with the emotional development of a 2 year old human. Greys like other large birds can be territorial when inside their cage then sweet and loving when outside of what they consider their territory (territorial levels vary from bird to bird), if bored some may pluck their feathers, tendency to bond to one person but most are willing to be loved by all. AGs will actually growl if they feel scared or threatened. They are cautious birds and typically they are not very sociable toward strangers. Dedicated and loyal, and very playful. They are mechanically intelligent and will figure out how to open their cage doors and escape.
The Eyes: baby AGs have dark grey to black eyes, at 6 months the eye color lightens, at a year the eyes turn pale grey, at a year and a half to two years the eyes become a pale straw color and at three to four years of age the eyes will have a light yellow iris.
Origin: Africa
Life span: 50 – 70 years
Diet: calcium is important but over doing it can be harmful without balancing with phophorus. A good parrot seed mix with minimal sun flower seeds along with a variety of foods including fruits, vegetables, and meats.
Trainability: know as the best talker (an intelligent talker), they usually start speaking at around a year old. They can have a vocabulary of 2000 words or more! They Not only say words they can mimic just about any sound, including the famous African Grey Scream and growl. However there is not guarantee an AG will talk. Take for instance our AG Scoot has that 2000+ vocabulary and Rambo’s vocabulary is only about 10+ which most of his vocabulary was learned by Scooter before him Rambo only Said Hello. Myah never spoke but made a few unique noises.
Loudness: quiet most of the time, can be loud some times, when being vocal they are usually talking not screaming or whistling (usually that doesn’t mean they don’t).
Male or Female? A blood test will tell you
Breeding: Greys mature at 4 to 5 years of age. The hen lays 3 to 4 eggs, incubates 26 days.
