Breeding Dogs For Dummies
Breeding Dogs For Dummies

Please think twice about breeding your dog before making what could be a very disastrous one. If you have an unexpected pregnancy please educate your self as much as possible so you are ready for what is to come.

You could lose your bitch or your litter or even both. Before during or even after whelp. Both male and female can be injured or worse during mating when they lock. You may have trouble selling the pups resulting in being stuck with them and if you decide you can’t keep the one’s you sold and end up giving them to the pound or a rescue then you are contributing to the number of homeless dogs. You should always give puppy buyers the option to return the dog to you in case they cannot keep it for whatever reason so that you are not contributing to the number of abused and homeless dogs. You should also be willing to adopt or at least help misfortunate dogs.

Dog breeding IS time consuming! You must be there constantly whether that means assisting in the litter or even taking over for the mother. It’s a 24 hour job and when they are first born it’s hard to feel safe enough to leave them 2 seconds even to use the bathroom. Having someone there to take shifts with is a blessing from heaven.

You should also only breed to improve a line that doesn’t necessarily mean to follow the crowd, if we had everyone doing that we would not have the wide variety of breeds we have to day and still growing. Just remember that it’s ok to be different.

I am striving for an extra large rottie that is like the original rottie (what it was before it ever saw Germany). That is the line I am developing and improving.

Reasons NOT to breed:

“I want my kids to experience the miracle of birth” What will happens if you get a deformed puppy. What happens if there are complications and you have to rush your bitch to the vet or what happens if she and/or the pups die. Are you willing to let them experience the miracle of death?

“Puppies are cute” ya they’re cute and there are millions in pounds, shelters, and rescues.

"i want a dog just like my dog" you can find just as good a dog at a shelter.
