Why Do Parakeets Do That?: Real Answers to the Curious Things Parakeets Do

Parakeets (small parrots)

Scientific Name: Melopstiliacus undulates

Temperament: If handled from a baby they can be very sweet and handle able. They are smart, affectionate and of course they are beautiful. They are very easy to care for and are affordable. Budgie are playful little acrobats.

About: the English budgie is larger and less active than the Australian and American budgie.

Tainability: parakeets are one of the top ten talking birds

Facts: the parakeet is a group of birds including alexandrine ring-necked, Indian ringneck, rosellas, & quakers. It was first discovered in 1805.

Origin: Australia

Life Span: 8 to 12+ years

Size: 7 inches

Male or Female? It is always best to go by a blood test if you really need to know the sex, however this is one way to tell for most budies. Look at your budgie’s cere. The cere is the area above the beak and surrounding the nostrils. Adult males cere is bright blue, adult females cere is brown, reddish, white, or light beige, when she is ready to breed her cere will be dark brown and may become rough. Young budgies ceres are usually a purple color until about 3 or 4 months of age. Young females also tend to be more aggressive than young males.

Breeding: Budgies become sexually mature at 3 to 4 months of age but should not be bred until they have reached a year old. Breeding season is at any time of the year, the hen usually lays 4 to 5 eggs. They incubate for 18 days and fledge for a month.

Diet: mostly a good budgie seed mix. Besure the seed mix doesn’t contain too many hulled oats these are fattening. Also fresh fruits and vegetables. Cuttlebone or oyster shell must be provided, and linatone is advisable for healthy skin and feathers.

Treats: millet spray, honey bells/sticks, cereal, corn bread, toast
