Genius: Nymphicus hollandicus
Size: 12.5 inches
Temperament: The cockatiel is good for the first time bird owner, they are low cost, manageable, intelligent, loving, social, and popular. The cockatiel expresses disapprovement in a loving way by painless squiggle bites accompanied by an angered raspy squeal. It’s important to keep your tiels wings clipped if you take it out of it’s cage often and certantly if you decide to take it out doors, because cockatiels tend to spook easily by loud noises even the tame ones. They will fly into walls or windows and can break their beaks or bones, and never bring your bird out with a going ceiling fan. They are mechanically intelligent and will figure out how to open their cage doors and escape.
About: Do not use the dome type of cages with the long slots for tiels they often get their wings caught in the wire and break feathers or bones and their feet can get caught at the top of the dome in the bars.. A rectangular or square cage with small square wire is the best for tiels.
Male or Female? The only way to accurately tell on most tiels is by a blood test. However there are signs to look for:
Males:
More vocal, whistle a lot, cheek patches are sometimes darker or brighter(I have males and females with dark bright cheek patches), showy( they tend to raise their wings) (I have a very showy female named Joey infact she is the most showy of all the tiels).
Females:
Females are usually quiet ( I have a few females who are vocal and Joey is one who laughs), if they are vocal it’s usually a screech, they tend to have markings like barring on the underside of their tails.
Breeding: Cheeked tiels become sexually mature at 6 to 9 months of age Do not breed them until they have reached a year old(1 and half is better), and white faced tiels become old enough to breed at 2 years old. In the wild they usually breed between August to December. The famle (the hen) lays 2 to 5 eggs. They incubate for 21 to 28 days but this can vary. It takes about 33 days for the young to fledge but will continue to be fed for another 3 weeks. They usually make good parents however some have a tendency to kill hatchlings so having a sergeant mother and father that loves to raise chicks is good to have on hand.
Life Span: 15 - 20+ years
Loudness: some are louder than others but generally they are quiet. I have observed that tiel flocks seem to be more vocal on a constant level than a single tiel kept away from other birds.
Facts: in pearls females retain their pearls with age and males loose theirs with age. Pearls tend to be larger. In greys the male has a light colored face and the females face is grey.
Origin: Australia
Diet: mostly seeds very few to no sunflower seeds is good, sunflower seeds have no nutritional benefit and are a snack ONLY. Make sure you look in your birds seed you should see minimal sunflower seeds, birds have died from malnutrition because their seed consisted of mostly sunflower. Also fresh fruit and vegetables are good, some birds take to them and others don’t however I have found all our cockatiels absouluty LOVE fresh corn on the cob.
Cockatiel mutations: normal grey, cinnamon, pearl, lutino, pied, silver, fallow, normal whiteface
Cross-mutations
Lutino whiteface or albino, cinnamon pearl, cinnamon-pearl-pied, cinnamon pearl whiteface, dominant silver whiteface
