Mating

dog breeding

(Dogs in a lock or tie)

The best days for mating are usually around day 12 some breeds may be earlier. To tell if she is in standing heat meaning she will allow the male to mate test for flagging by running your hand down her back if she is in standing heat she should lift her tail. She will also mount the male and dance around him. A good stud won’t try to mate until he senses the smell of progesterone given off when she is ovulating. If you are unsure of the best days to breed her take her to the vet to get her a vaginal cytology. It’s good to get at least two matings in three is better every other day 48 hours apart. This will give the male time to replenish his sperm.

It will take 48 hours for the eggs to ripen before allowing the penetration of sperm when she ovulates. The female may release some 200 eggs, which the male can fertilize. Her body and will absorb the unhealthy and some healthy fertilized eggs, leaving fertilized eggs that her body is able to care for. Some times she might even absorb them all resulting in no litter of pups.

There are dangers for both male and female during mating. The male’s penis has actual bone in it so it can break. When they are in a tie or lock the male can pull too hard on the female ripping his penis out of her and causing her to hemorrhage.

The male determines the sex of the puppies and the female determines how many puppies.

Reasons a female may not get pregnant: She has absorbed all her eggs, she is too young or too old, she is in false heat, she was bred on the wrong days, she is unhealthy, or the stud has a low sperm count.

The unbreedable female

The female who won’t stand for the male no matter what. This is usually the case in females whose vulvas don’t swell up enough and mating becomes painful for them. You may try a little KY Jelly and don’t give up trying to get them to mate or artificial insemination.
