Trained Protection Dogs

There are two types of trained protection dogs, the Schutzhund dog & the Personal Protection dog.

A Schutzhund trained dog is a sport protection dog, this kind of protection work has no training for real life scenarios and the game is always played out the same way; this sport is for "show" a weak nerved dog can succeed in Schutzhund work but when it comes to real protection work that dog would fail.

A personal protection trained dog has had training in real life scenarios, he learns to bite other places than the sleeve, and the dog is challenged more.

Whether it is Schutzhund or Personal Protection work the foundation work is the same. Prey drive is above everything if a dog does not have prey drive it cannot do this work. The dog learns prey drive, to have a firm grip, and to focus, this should be done before Defense work comes into the picture.

A dog can complete his Schutzhund titles first and then go onto train in personal protection work, but the temperament of the dog must be correct.

If a dog has a high natural protection level it is good to still do bite work with this dog. A dog with experience in real life scenarios will have a better chance to know what to do and how to react if something really happened. A dog trained in protection work will be skilled in knowing how to fight an aggressor because he has learned the art of it.
