Signs to Look for to Know When She Will Whelp
Your dam’s temperature will tell you within 24 hours of whelping.
Start taking her temperature on day 56 2 to 3 times a day I usually take it more often than that my female has gotten quite used to having her temp taken. Do Not miss taking her temperature.
Her temperature will rise very high 12 to 24 hours before it drops when it drops below 98.4 she is due within 24 hours. If she goes beyond 24 hours contact your vet. The best times for temp taking is morning and evening when they have been sleeping. It won’t be accurate if they have been running around.
I always use a digital thermometer. glass rectal thermometers work well too unless your dog is hyper then defiantly use a digital thermometer it is the safest and easy to read. Note always use the same thermometer for accurate readings.
Note: a normal temperature in dogs is 101.5 and a dam in her last part of her pregnancy will have a temp of around 100.
Taking Her Temperature:
Use petroleum jelly as a lubricant before inserting it.
Have you dog lay down on her side, insert it into the rectum don’t let go of it you may loose it. No need to stick it in a long way just a few inches if you feel blockage just swivel it around a little and keep it in for about 2 minutes.
Other signs to look for
She will begin nesting behavior digging around, digging big holes in the yard.
Her pupils will dilate.
She will pant a lot.
You will find her under tables, beds, in den like places.
A litter can be safely whelped on day 58 anything before that contact your vet as well as a female who hasn’t whelped by day 67
