Whelping Supplies

- Antiseptic: apply to the umbilical cord

- Beer: for your bitch if she doesn’t have milk (2tsp for a 10lb dog; ¼ Cup for larger breeds)

- Bulb syringe: for aspirating fluids from the throat and nose. (aspirate the throat before the nose)

- Dull Scissors: to cut the umbilical cord, dull scissors also crimp the cord

- Garbage Can: Trust me you’ll need it and have some extra bags for changing.

- Heating Pad: put pups over the pad on a low setting with a towel over them; I usually have the pups in a box with the heating pad under it and the towel draped over the box, when the bitch is having another pup I put them back in the box when she is in between pups I have the pups nursing. Nursing can help contractions along for the next pup.

- Hair Dryer: This is an option to dry them off after the towel.

- Identifying mark: I use different colored ribbons tied loosely but not too loose and when they grow out of them I just cut them off and put on another. When tying the ribbons make sure your not stays put and doesn’t slip.

- Karo Syrup: a few drops will give weak pups energy quick

- Paper and Pen: For recording time, weight, ribbon color of each pup, notes on pups, dam, whelping, keep track of the placentas, est.

- Paper Towels: the best paper towels I use are Viva paper towels they work the best for pups.

- Scale: use this to weigh the pups at birth and keep track of their weight. I weigh the pups every day to make sure no one is loosing weight.

- Stethoscope: for listening for heartbeats to make sure your dam has delivered them all.

- Styptic Powder: to stop bleeding

- Towels: to rub the pups hard to stimulate them. Note: You can never have enough towels.

- Whelping Box: You can buy foldable whelping boxes with pig rails to prevent mother from crushing her pups; a kids wading pool is another one; you can make one out of plywood or cardboard.
